Insight: How GTX Could Become SRO's "Biggest and Most Valuable" Property
Inside SRO Motorsports Group's continued push for a multi-faceted all-electric vehicle competition...
Outside of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, electric racing has yet to take off in the mainstream racing circles, although Stephane Ratel is hoping to change that with his GTX Experimental World Tour.
Devised as a multi-discipline competition and road show incorporating closed-circuit racing, rally stages, hill climbs and drag racing featuring race-prepped grand touring EVs, Ratel, the father of the ultra-popular GT3 platform along with the FIA, believes GTX could be the next big hit for customer sports car racing.
Yet the founder and CEO of SRO Motorsports Group has faced challenges in launching the concept, which was first presented to the public some five years ago and was one of the several projects delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, SRO received a significant boost two years ago when it acquired the rights of the famed Targa Florio name, in agreement with the Automobile Club d’Italia, to stage an all-electric competition around portions of the iconic roads in Sicily that was initially set to run for the first time last year.
While the debut has been pushed back to 2026, Ratel and GTX business development manager Gianmaria Dolci have been forging ahead on the innovative concept with manufacturers.
